Automation is not the same as autonomy

For many ecommerce teams, the right first step is an AI assistant that prepares a grounded draft. A teammate remains responsible for the final message. The assistant does the lookup and writes the first version, while the merchant retains control over customer-facing commitments.

What approval should review

A reviewer should see the customer question, relevant Shopify facts, policy or knowledge excerpt, and the draft itself. This makes review a quick decision instead of a hunt through multiple tabs, and creates useful feedback for improving the knowledge base.

Keep high-impact actions out of the first version

Refunds, cancellations, compensation, and other irreversible changes deserve explicit handling. A safe assistant can recognize a request and route it to a human without pretending it completed the action.

Measure trust, not just speed

Track acceptance, edit rate, missing sources, and abstentions. A slightly slower workflow with a low error rate can be a better business result than broad automation with hidden risk.

Keep the loop grounded.
